What Is Lymphatic Drainage and Why Should You Care?

Despite the fact the lymphatic system of the body plays a pivotal role in removing waste products from the body, it is not one we hear about often. The lymphatic system is a crucial player in your body’s ability to ward off disease and heal from injury. When the lymphatic system is sluggish or clogged, the body retains damaging toxins. Cellulite is only one of the common symptoms of inadequate lymphatic drainage. Others include constant minor aches and pains, low energy, susceptibility to colds and flu, not to mention swelling in your fingers, feeling stiff or sore when you wake up in the morning, brain fog, bloating, and excess weight. So, as you can imagine, this plethora of symptoms doesn’t make it easy to determine that you are experiencing a clogged immune system. The good news is, there is treatment for this relatively common affliction.

There are many approaches to help get the lymph fluid flowing again, such as starting to move again by adding exercise to your daily routine, also, avoid sitting or standing for extended periods of time. Unlike blood circulation, the lymphatic system has no central pump, such as the heart, to move fluid to the lymph glands. Instead, it uses the massaging effect of surrounding muscles to move the fluid. This is why exercise is important. Simple changes like eating a cleaner diet, incorporating red raw foods like beets, cherries, cranberries, pomegranate, berries, and simply breathing and laughing! Yes-breathing and laughing! Another common suggestion is to not wear tight-fitting clothing. However, often these lifestyle changes alone aren’t enough to combat the issue. Lymphatic enhancement therapy is available to unclog the pipes and get your lymph fluid and detoxification moving again and can include several different elements.

Compression bandages or garments, such as sleeves, gloves, stockings, or tights, fitted over affected limbs act as a counterforce to muscles. This stimulates more effective lymph drainage. The combination of exercise and compression encourages the fluid to move out of the affected limb. Compression garments may also be applied after a massage session to prevent fluid from accumulating in the limb again.

Massage is also another method to help stimulate lymphatic drainage. If you’re like me, I need answers. Why can’t I just drink water? Why is this better? Well, read on because I’m going to tell you…

Water, Water, Everywhere…

It’s really quite simple. Our bodies are made up of mostly water, 55 – 65 percent depending on age, gender, and body composition.

A large number of the population is mildly to moderately dehydrated at any given time.  People begin to feel thirsty when they have lost only around 2-3 percent of their body’s water. Mental performance and physical coordination start to become impaired even before thirst kicks in, typically around 1 percent loss.

So why is this, why is it so important to stay hydrated?  Water is the primary building block of our cells.

Most of us know, of course, that water is needed to flush out waste and toxins. I bet we can also recall from our formative years of school that our body uses water to regulate our body’s temperature through perspiration and respiration.

What we don’t think about often enough is water as a lubricant and shock absorber. It protects our brains, eyes, spinal cords, and other body tissues against any shocks when we are active, either intentionally or unintentionally. Water also enhances the function of nerve cells and protects them from thousands of chemical reactions occurring nearby. It helps in the smooth movement of our joints and allows their surfaces to slide and glide with minimal friction. Without water, movement of any joint becomes stiff and painful.

When we think of it like that, it is easy to understand how important it is for all of us to stay hydrated, especially those of us who lead active and fast-paced lives.

OK, I get it, water is good. So why IV?

The simple answer is that IV fluids hydrate you faster and better than drinking water, that’s why over 60% of people who come through hospital emergency rooms are treated with IV. But… when talking about the amazing but complicated perfection that is our bodies, simple will not do.

While vitamin IV hydration therapy has been around for some time, recently it has been gaining in popularity and for good reason. While most people are familiar with the hangover drips made famous on reality shows and in Vegas, there are better reasons to get vitamin IV therapy. Some of those reasons are malnourishment, inflammation, and chronic dehydration, just to name a few.

So it’s good but it is it safe? The short answer is that it is safe but there are always risk with any venipuncture or invasIVe procedure. The risks include but are not limited to:

Readjusting to civilian life after deployment is hard, and even more so when a veteran has been exposed to trauma leading to PTSD. Too often, veterans turn to alcohol or drugs to cope with symptoms of PTSD. Studies show PTSD and substance use problems are strongly related in people who served in the military.
The biochemical reasons that trauma can lead to addiction are beginning to be understood:
Trauma activates the amygdala, the brain’s threat detection center, so that it becomes hyper-vigilant, constantly scanning for and assessing threat. As a result, trauma survivors often feel intensely anxious, vulnerable, and fearful—emotions that may even interfere with sleep, worsening their feelings of anxiety, fear, and vulnerability.
The prefrontal cortex, where the brain’s “executive functions” are processed, is short-circuited when we’re in “fight, flight, or freeze” mode. Survival takes precedence over logical thinking, cognitive processing, and even impulse control. When a survivor turns to drugs for relief—and later attempts to quit their addictive behavior—the cravings can be overwhelming—retriggering the survival impulse.
The stress of trauma—compounded by the further stress of addiction—depletes the body’s NAD levels, which are needed for feelings of calm, clarity, focus, and well-being. Trauma leads to addiction, leads to NAD depletion, becoming a negatively reinforcing spiral.
Doctors often prescribe pain, anxiety, depression, etc meds to treat the problem but they often come with more side effects. After only a few appointments, we are able to restore NAD levels to the point that the brain can resume providing the stress relief needed to deal with life.
